March 03, 2010Sotheby’s choice of Hong Kong for its auction of a 5.16-carat blue diamond places a new emphasis on the Asian capitol as a lucrative center of the international jewelry market. Both Sotheby’s and Christie’s have seen Hong Kong’s share of the world jewelry market sharply rise, paralleling its growing status as a center for international wine sales.

March 03, 2010Polaroid once handed out cameras and equipment to leading artists. They were urged to experiment. Polaroid just wanted some prints in return. They got them, by the thousands from the likes of Warhol, Adams, Hockney, Rauschenberg, Mapplethorpe and others captivated by the “instant thrill” of 1-minute prints. Now a bankruptcy court has ordered Polaroid to put 1200 of those prints up for auction in June.

March 02, 2010A Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, sold last year by Canadian based RM Auctions for $12.1 million, still retains the crown for any car bought at auction. It is far, however, from the highest price paid for an automobile. Earlier this year a Ferrari 250GT fetched $28 million in a private sale, and now RM Auctions is offering another Ferrari 250 for $20 million. Private sales in the first two months of this year alone have exceeded $117 million, as collectors bypass the auction block.

February 26, 2010Who is stronger, Batman or Superman? In the auction world, it’s no contest. Three days after a Superman comic book sold for a record $1 million, a Batman comic book has surpassed it, fetching a new record $1.75 million at a Heritage Auction Sale in Dallas. Like Batman and Superman, both buyer and seller of the rare 1939 copy of Detective Comics chose to remain anonymous.

January 28, 2010Victims of Bernie Madoff are more than $1 million closer to restitution after yesterday’s Ft. Lauderdale sale of his three boats. “Bull,” Madoff’s classic Rybovitch sport fisherman, garnered $700,000, his 38-footer, “Sitting Bull,” sold $320,000, while his smallest, a 23-footer named “Little Bull,” fetched $21,000. A larger yacht, a 61-foot Viking owned by his disgraced CFO Frank DiPascali was top seller at $950,000.
